This post was intended to be the week 6 recap. I had laid out the structure and was starting to fill in the text when I hit publish by mistake. I thought that I had changed it back to draft status but apparently not. When I realized my mistake, I decided to change it into a blooper post. Actually, it is a pair of bloopers.
The second blooper is a short video of a situation during a hunt in week 5. We were following Stella as she tracked what we thought was one bird. The cover was very thick with a lot of tall prairie grass laying flat due to wind. As we approached a thicket, birds starting popping up ahead of us. I noticed Stella on point off to my right. I was facing her when a rooster flushed to my left. As I turned left and brought the gun up to fire, my feet got tangled up. I fired and ended up slowly falling backwards, landing on my back in soft grass. I controlled the gun all the way down so that was not a problem. The problem turned out to be that when I landed, it was on the water bladder in my vest. This caused the bite valve on the drinking tube to pop off and water to pour out on my shirt, which you can see in the video.
One thing that you probably did not notice in the video is that the camera actually captured the shotgun shell wad when I fired. If you look closely in the smoke cloud coming out of the barrel of the gun, you will see a smudge. This is the wad.
Lessons Learned
- When creating a post, be more careful about hitting the “publish” button before the post is ready.
- In tough cover, get my feet stable before firing. Probably easier said than done but something I need to be mindful of.
