Phase 2 of the Deck Rebuild Project is to put footings under the structure. The original deck was installed with posts and beams resting on concrete footings that sit on the ground. Code for an attached deck require footings below the frost line.
My plan was to use Screw Piles, supporting a beam that extends across the deck. The first step was to jack up the deck and support it so that the existing beam could be moved. Once the beam was free, I extended it full width and moved it closer to the house by a couple of inches.
Then I installed 5 screw piles. They screw into the ground, below the frost line. Then the support saddles can be adjusted to level the beam and deck.
After the piles were in place and the beam positioned correctly I used rafter ties to tie the bean to the deck structure. They added a lot of rigidity to the deck.
