2022-12-27 Minnesota Winter Rooster

This was a local hunt as the season winds down. When I left the house the wind didn’t seem very strong but as I got closer to the hunting location the wind got progressively stronger. In many places, snow was drifting over the highway.

At our hunting location Bill and I started out by checking a food plot next to some evergreen trees. We didn’t see any tracks, although given the wind they would have filled in quickly.

Snow depths varied from a few inches to drifts that were thigh high. In some places the snow was light and fluffy while in other spots it was drifted hard. In some spots I could walk on top of the drifts but in most cases I would break through. This made for some very difficult walking.

We worked our way west on some snow mobile trails and then diverted into some wooded cover. At the edge of a field there was a thicket about 40 yards across, consisting of shrub trees and tall grass. Stella was working this with Bill and me on opposite outside edges. Stella went on point so I busted my way into the thicket. Using my handheld I was able to locate where Stella was, or at least where I thought she was. It was a snow covered bush. As I got close, a rooster shot out with Stella close behind. The bird flew towards Bill as I yelled rooster. He dropped it with one shot. (Video below.)

After that we covered some cattails and more wooded cover but saw nothing else.
