2022-12-14 Iowa Pheasant Hunt

We made a decision at the last minute to go to Iowa. The first day, Wednesday was predicted to be dry, which it was. We tried some new areas and while we didn’t get any shots we did see birds at the second location.

On Thursday, it was snowing, as predicted. We worked the ground and ended up limiting out in rather unusual circumstances. We shot at four birds, harvested three and ended up with six. After we bagged the sixth bird and unloaded our guns we were walking back to the truck when I happened to notice something unusual on the snow. It was a tiny toad just sitting on the snow. When touched, it didn’t move. Not sure how it got there. We just took a picture and left it alone. (See last picture in gallery below.)

We have had a ton of great experiences on our trips, especially with the dogs. It is hard for people who don’t hunt to understand the appeal of hunting with a dog. So, I got a GoPro and have started to capture some video of selected action on our hunts. The videos for this hunt appear below.

When there are birds, we spend a lot of time following the dog as she tracks and hopefully points the bird.

Occasionally, birds will flush without the dog being anywhere near by.

At times, the dogs will find birds that have been crippled by other hunters or predators.

On rare occasions, birds will sit so tight that the dog will be pointing just inches away. If the bird flushes the wrong way, the dog may catch them, as shown in this video.
