My first project of the 2023 summer season was to build a 9×13 shed. This is a permanent structure for the stuff that was previously stored in the shed-in-box. This became necessary after the failure of the previous shed. The project started with the Shed Site Prep.
Background
Why 9×13 since that is an odd size? It is because there is an existing concrete slab just off of the sport court. The slab was originally used for a dog kennel by the family that built the house so, I am building the shed to use the existing slab. The photo gallery contains pictures showing showing how the ATV and lawn tractor will be parked.
The first phase is the site prep. The slab is built into an incline with the right side (in the pictures) higher than the slab. I don’t want water running downhill and ending up on the slab so I am digging a trench around the slab and filling it with rock. Any water that flows downhill will enter the trench and be routed around the slab.
Execution
I started by marking the trenches with string then cutting the sod along the string. Next I dug out the sod to be recycled. Some went to an area that was bare dirt and the rest was used to patch holes that the dogs created while digging for moles. Once the sod was gone, I flattened out the trench bottom and made sure that they sloped downhill. Next, I installed edging before packing the trench bottoms.
The last step was to put down landscape fabric and then rock. I went to the Eagan Gertens and bought a half yard of “Large Gray Trap” which is the same type of rock around the house. Using the tractor, I hauled the rock from the front of the house to the site.
Summary
The shed site prep was finished in a two partial days. Now that it is done I can move onto starting the actual construction.
