Earlier this week I was helping a friend do some winter storm clean up and a couple small prairie burns. There was very little wind and both prairies were very dry.
We started by burning a long narrow area. We started at the downwind end and let the fire work its way into the wind. That burn took quite a while because we kept it small due to nearby trees.
Next we moved to a more rectangular area that was bordered by a plowed field and a driveway. This one we let rip. There is a short video below of that burn.
After we finished this burn I had to leave. The landowner said he had a real small area that he could do himself and he proceeded to start that burn as I was leaving. A couple hours later I got a call from the landowner that he had decided to burn another small area along the road, near a grove of white pines. It was just a small area so he started it in three places. What he failed to notice was that the grass was full of dry pine needles. The fire quickly grew and because it was going in three places it quickly got out of control. He ended up calling the fire department when it got into a power pole and a couple of dead pine trees.
