The stars aligned, the weather was great and the crew was willing. It was time to shingle the roof.
It turned out that we weren’t supposed to install the drip edge on the sloping roof sections so we started by carefully taking them off. Next we laid down 2 overlapping pieces of felt roofing paper. After trimming the edges we reinstalled the drip edges.
The next step was to lay a starter course of shingles along the long edge. Once that was done then we started laying down and nailing the shingles. The shingles were marked with lines to help line them up and where to nail them. So things moved along pretty quickly. Eventually we got into a rhythm where Cary and I positioned and nailed the shingles while Mike did all of the cutting. We did the East side first then moved the scaffolding to the west side. Then we repeated the process on the west side. This went much faster as we had our system down.
Once both sides were installed then Mike and I cut shingles into thirds and Cary nailed the pieces along the ridge to form the top cap.
After some cleanup, the guys helped the hang the south door on the track. Unfortunately, the door had warped while it laid on the pallet. So I either need to try to straighten it or take it off and lay the other side on the pallet to warp it back to neutral.
Getting the roofing done was a huge step forward. Most of the remaining work is stuff I can handle myself, like caulking and painting.
