Press release: Willow Caught a Crow. A large black bird was caught today while trespassing with a gang of it’s peers. This gang has been seen in the neighborhood on multiple occasions. Usually hanging out in the trees harassing the residents with their loud calls and frequent arguments.
Incident Description
Willow takes her job of guarding the homestead quite seriously. She will typically be found on the deck, watching the yard for any possible intruders, whether they be squirrels, birds or other dogs outside of the fence. If she is not on the deck she will be in the den, constantly on guard, ready to streak out the door in pursuit of any trespassers. In the picture below, both dogs are on high alert. Do not interpret Willow’s posture as sleeping. She is coiled and ready to act upon any provocation, within the rules of engagement.
On the morning of the incident, I was at the table reading the paper when I heard a clatter out on the deck. It sounded like a dog leaving the deck at high speed. (Note: The deck has scratches from previous high speed exits.) Immediately after the clatter, there was a loud outcry from multiple crows right outside of the house. They were not happy and were very vocal about it.
I jumped to my feet and quickly went out the patio door. There was Willow with the trespassing crow in her mouth. I can only assume that she had pointed it for a while, as a warning and when the crow got too close to the deck she acted. I got a trash bag, collected the carcass and disposed of it. The others continued to complain for another 15 minutes before flying off. The gang has not been seen in the neighborhood since the incident.
Summary
I expect there to be protests and demands to release the security video by the crow family in preparation for a lawsuit. No doubt there will be calls for Willow to be restrained for excessive use of force, despite the fact that she was just doing her job, following well established procedures. She has not been placed on administrative leave or sanctioned in any way. On the contrary, Willow was awarded a biscuit for her decisive action.
